Overview

The Bubye Valley Conservancy (BVC) is one of Africa's most remarkable conservation success stories. This 3,500 km² private conservancy in the Limpopo province of southern Zimbabwe has been transformed over two decades from degraded, overgrazed cattle rangeland into one of the continent's premier wildlife areas. The BVC now holds Africa's third-largest lion population (behind the Serengeti and Kruger), significant breeding populations of both black and white rhino, and outstanding hunting opportunities for buffalo, leopard, and diverse plains game.

The transformation of Bubye Valley demonstrates the power of the hunting-conservation model. Revenue from hunting safaris funds the entire conservation operation, including extensive anti-poaching patrols, veterinary programmes, fence maintenance across hundreds of kilometres of perimeter, and ongoing wildlife management. The result is a self-sustaining conservation enterprise that protects endangered species while providing world-class hunting.

The Bubye Valley terrain is classic southern lowveld: extensive mopane woodland, rugged rocky ridges and kopjes, mixed broadleaf bush, and productive riverine forest along the Bubye River and its numerous tributaries. The conservancy's large size and carefully managed hunting pressure produce exceptional trophy quality across all species. Buffalo bulls regularly carry spreads exceeding 40 inches, and the dense lion population means that male lions displaced from prides grow to impressive size, with full, dark manes.

The BVC is also an excellent destination for combination safaris. A typical 10 to 14 day hunt combines buffalo with three to five plains game species including greater kudu, eland, sable antelope, zebra, and impala. The relatively easy access from Bulawayo (four to five hours by road) and the availability of comfortable camps with modern amenities make Bubye Valley a strong choice for hunters who want serious wildlife in a well-managed environment.
